Thor the Boxer from Almost Home Boxer Rescue needs to find his fur-ever home. Click here to find out more.

The Almost Home Boxer Rescue brought Thor in to our studio the other day as part of our rescue group photo program. To learn more about how to adopt this gorgeous boy click here.

My doctors have put me on a change of diet to help with my seizure control and to help me lose weight. Dr. Lyons has also began to lower my medicines and has added some great vitamins and herbs to keep me healthy. It’s really working great because I haven’t had any seizures since I’ve been on this new regimen; almost 2 months.

Losing weight is really tough though! I walk about a mile every evening but I’m hungry all the time and sometimes get very curious about what is on the kitchen cabinets and in the garbage can. My foster mom and dad is teaching me that’s not a good idea and I’m improving on this everyday.

I still like to play and rough house with my foster furry brother and sister, but because I’m still a big guy sometimes my foster mom and dad have to remind me not to play too rough.

I get along great with older kids. The little ones I might accidentally knock down, but I don’t mean to. I’m such a happy go luck guy that I just want to give lots of kisses!!

I don’t care for the furry animals that go ‘Meow’ They seem like a good snack to me!

If you can give me lots of love and attention and pay for my very reasonable seizure medicine and take me in for occasional veterinary checkups then I’m the dog for you!! Remember my name ‘THOR’

Sookie the brindle female Boxer came to visit A Dog’s Life Photography through our rescue group photo program. Rescue organizations, click here for details on how you can participate, too. The following info was provided by the Almost Home Boxer Rescue:

My name is Sookie and I am a female Boxer that is the foster care of the Almost Home Boxer Rescue.

I love so many things in life….wiggling like crazy, playing chase and doing boxer burns around the yard and playing with my squeaky plush toy! Man, I could play with my squeaky toy for hours!!!!

Most of all, I love cuddling and giving kisses!

Before I tell you more about what I love—a little about me—I was picked up by the Humane Society with a dislocated elbow. They called Almost Home Boxer Rescue and I was whisked away to the vet, where my arm was surgically fixed. I sported a fancy cast for a couple months, and when my cast came off, I had to go through rehab because I had this crazy limp. But I worked REALLY hard over the last few months, and now you can’t even tell I had surgery! To keep my elbow super healthy, I need two 15 minute walks daily, and a little glucosamine with my meals.

Ok, so back to what I LOVE. I LOVE my crate! During the day when my foster mom is at work, she let’s me hang out in there all day. Sure, I could hang out in the house because I am housetrained, but why give up an awesome crate and a luxurious dog bed?

In my forever home, I would love to have a family that would give me all the hugs and kisses I could ever want. Ok… my foster mom says I should tell you that I do best following “Nothing in Life is Free” training. It makes me a very well-behaved pup—but if you let me sneak up on the bed and snuggle every once in a while I PROMISE I won’t tell! A handsome male dog to play with and a cat or two would be ok too.

Let all your friends and family know that I am ready for a forever home!!!!

PS…..I’m about 4YO

Simon is a rescue from Maricopa Animal Control’s euthanasia list. He was a medical mess – suffered from malnutrition, emaciated, tested positive for Tick Fever causing his nose to bleed, blind in his left eye with broken blood vessels in both eyes from the catch pole, and tested positive for Valley Fever causing him to be lame in one leg and swollen joints in all four legs.

He growled at everyone that went near him, but after about ten minutes of pets and soft touch he warmed up to the volunteers of the Almost Home Boxer Rescue, who cried at the shelter due to his condition.

Simon’s prior foster mom and now his new forever mom says, “From that day forward, though at the time I didn’t know it, Simon became part of my family. He was in foster care for six months with minimal interest due to his health before I adopted him. Over the last two and half years, Simon has undergone daily physical therapy, exercises, and massages to help him gain muscle in his back legs that have been affected by Valley Fever. He also takes medication to treat Valley Fever and a variety of other vitamins to help keep him healthy. He wasn’t able to physically sit down like a normal dog until just a year and a half ago – took a year for his knees and hips to bend in a sitting position. Since being in my home, Simon has been a fantastic foster brother to eight Almost Home rescues that have come in and out of our home. He teaches them to play like a boxer, snore like a boxer, and lick like a boxer! He loves the resident cats, Lily and Mia, and can often be found trying to box Mia if our house is foster free. Simon is the best dog I could ever wish for! We have nicknamed him ‘Simon the Wonder Dog!’”

Speaking of licking like a Boxer, during Simon’s photo shoot, his tounge was flying around everywhere! So, I tried a little trick I use to keep dog’s tongues in their mouths…. peanut butter. He sure did like it, but it had the opposite effect that I was going for. It made for some pretty funny photos though!!

Kool Aid, a 2 year old English Bull Terrier, was picked up as a stray by a local shelter and placed in an unmarked kennel. No one realized he was locked in the outside run for 2 days with no food or water until they put a seized fighting dog into the same indoor run and opened the dog door dividing the two areas. The fighting dog went to town on Kool Aid for about 45 mins until someone realized what happened. His back leg and neck were shredded and no one thought he would make it.

Kool-Aid was taken into foster care through the Almost Home Boxer Rescue. His foster-dad Andy brought him home, got him healthy and couldn’t let him go anywhere. It didn’t take long before there was no question - he was part of the family and found his forever home.

Tang, a 9 month old English Bull Terrier, was also picked up as a stray and was cared for by the Almost Home Boxer Rescue. His owners were eventually found but they did not want him anymore.

He has obsessive traits that are believed to be the result of lack of activity. Chewing his tail is one of these compulsive behaviors. He ended up chewing off the end of his tail. It became infected and had to be removed.

Their new dog-dad Andy says, “These guys have completed my life and I can’t imagine it without them. Over the past few months they have become best buds and really do have a big/baby brother relationship. They have the best personalities, but do require a strong owner, structure, and boats loads of excercise.”

Lola Bear is a Hungarian-bred French Bulldog. She was bred to be sold to local pet stores. Lola’s owners fell in love with her at a pet store, signed the papers and bought this sweet little girl. What the owners didn’t expect is that Lola is allergic to almost anything and everything in the world. They did their best to resolve Lola’s health issues, but could not afford the expensive vet bills. They brought her into French Bulldog Rescue Network , very reluctantly, as they loved her dearly.

Lola is now with her loving foster parents, Lyle and Lynne. They had an allergy panel run on Lola Bear which helped them to identify the best foods for her to eat for her condition. She will also need to go through a series of allergy injections. To help control Lola’s scratching, they usually dress her in cute outfits like this one:

Without her outfits on, much of her skin is exposed due to severe loss of fur as a result of her allergies:

But despite her baldness and itching, she is still an adorable dog.

Basil was surrendered to the pound because his previous owners had trouble dealing with his vision issues. Unfortunately, Basil is essentially blind. Basil was rescued by Almost Home Boxer Rescue. Lyle and Lynne are a part of this wonderful rescue group. Since everyone there knows that they love frenchies, they asked them to take Basil in as a foster dog. They ended up falling head over heels in love with him, so they adopted him. Can you blame them? How can you help but to fall in love with a face like this…

He loves to play with the other rescue dogs in his home and loves to sit in his new dog-mom and dog-dad’s laps and just enjoy life. Despite his vision loss, they find it amazing that he can get around and figure things out in their household so well. He doesn’t let his vision problems get him down! He is the happiest little boy and so are his parents now that he is a permanent part of their lives. They just cannot imagine that this little guy might have been put down just because he is blind.

While I was photographing Basil, I didn’t notice anything different about his eyes. I suppose that I didn’t study them real well while I was frantically busy trying to snap photos in the split seconds that we could get him to look my way. It wasn’t until I opened up the photos on my computer to edit them that I noticed these peculiar white formations. At first, I thought that maybe it was a reflection from the umbrella on my light but that wasn’t it because I saw that reflection in another part of his eye. Then I realized that the light bouncing into his eyes and back into my lens allowed me to look into the damaged part of his eyes. You can see it pretty well in the photo below…

Lola and Basil will be featured in my upcoming book (I still haven’t come up with a name for it yet!). Check back often to see more dogs that will also be gracing the pages with their adorable faces.

Almost Home Boxer Rescue is a foster-home based, non-profit organization founded in 2005. Their mission is to rescue, rehabilitate and rehome unwanted pets to fur-ever families! They mainly rescue Boxers but on occasion they will help out other breeds if the animal is in danger of being euthanized.
