We’re back from our road trip! I can’t even begin to explain how much fun we had last weekend. It was a blast!
I thought I would start by saying that I love being in the company of so many greyhounds… and their owners. Greyhound people rock! We met so many fantastic people and took some awesome photographs! The Greyhound Gathering, in it’s entirety was put together by Claudia Presto with the Greyhound Gang. She is a superstar! Susan and I send out our sincere appreciation for such a well put together and FUN event!
We started the weekend out with a Friday morning hike into the spectacular Pugh Canyon. Along the way we chatted with other greyhound owners. There were people there from Las Vegas, Washington State, Arizona, California and more.
After a shower and some breakfast, we headed out to our private tour at Best Friends, the unequivocal highlight of our trip. Have you seen Dogtown on Animal Planet? We were there. It was amazing. We were taken through the horse pastures, one of which was an old movie set. Kanab has been dubbed “Little Hollywood” due to the fact that the beautiful scenery has produced many an old time western. The “Apple Dumpling Gang” was filmed there. How cool is that?! We saw the cats, the pigs, the birds, the bunnies… even the pet cemetery and memorial. With over 1,700 animals living on the property there are so many things to see.
We ended the day with a really great presentation about all things greyhound… where I got some amazing tips. They also honored the “Golden Oldies”, those dogs who were 10 years old or older. My Sashi is 11 so she was one of the dogs honored. This included a walk down to the front to accept a really cute prize of joint supplements, booklets and a handmade blanket.
Saturday started out with a ton of laughs from the parade and costume contest. My favorites were the Budweiser Clydesdales… a team of six black greyhounds dressed to look like horses “pulling” the cardboard sled. They were adorable! The local townspeople came out to watch us and show their greyhound love. It was so amazing.
After some shopping and silent auction bidding, we went back to Best Friends for the evening’s activities. We had a fantastic time at Angel’s Landing, a natural amphitheater made out of the gorgeous red rock, where we participated in Yappy Hour… a wine tasting (for the humans) and chicken soup shots (for the dogs) that included the live auction and culminated in a group “roo”. It’s a greyhound thing. It’s like a howl but way cooler… and then you add 200+ dogs doing it and it’ll give you goose bumps.
Sunday morning was the Blur of Fur… a super-fun activity where we got to run the dogs at full speed and get them clocked by the local policeman with his radar gun. My youngest, 2 year old Chloe, ran 34 mph! She was the fastest dog there that morning. Watching these dogs run is the most amazing thing. They are so happy in that moment. I swear they are smiling. Everyone comes to watch whether or not they have a dog running, just because it’s so much fun.
It was a long weekend but chock full of fun times. We barely made it back to the car and my three dogs, Bodhi, Sashi and Chloe were passed out! They slept the whole ride home!
Between the new friends, the new information and the outpouring of love for greyhounds, I had the most fun I’ve had in a long time. It was a memory that I will keep with me forever.
