We’ve had a lot of questions about my healthy dog food post asking for more details about Blue Buffalo 
It started a few years ago when I was standing in the store trying to figure out which dog food was the best. I was so confused. What is a by-product? What’s the difference between that and ‘meal’? What are all of these really long words that I can’t pronounce? Are they nutritious or are they filler? Does the order of ingredients matter as much in dog food as it does in human food? I had a ton of questions. Luckily, there was someone there who could help me answer those questions. Enter the Blue Buffalo representative.
I’m sure you’ve seen them, those lonely wanderers with their cute aprons who don’t actually work for the store but rather for individual dog food companies. I think most people’s initial reaction is to avoid them like the plague but I’ve found them on occasion to be quite helpful. Of course they are going to push their product, that’s what they’re paid to do, but they are also chock full of information on what to feed your dog. I strongly encourage you to talk to the Blue Buffalo people if you should run into one at your local pet store. Ask them why you should buy their product. They will tell you what makes Blue different.
The one thing that stood out the most for me was their ‘cold formed’ Life Source Bits©. These bits are never heated over a certain temperature in order to preserve the nutritional potency. In addition to that, Blue has a strict policy of always putting a great protein source as the first ingredient. Like human grade food, the order of ingredients is crucial in dog food. You always want to make sure that the first ingredient listed is a good one. A full protein source such as chicken or fish is the best you can get. Combine that with real fruits and vegetables and you’ve got the recipe for healthy and happy pets.
I encourage you to test them out against your current dog food by taking their True Blue Test. You enter your dog’s name, pick the food you are currently serving and voila! The results speak for themselves, and when you’re done, you end up with a $5.00 off coupon! How can you beat that?
In the end, it’s about educating yourself. You can do the research online or talk to a representative in store. Just know what you are feeding your beloved pets. I believe the food you give can be directly linked to their longevity. I intend to do everything possible to insure all of my pets live the longest life possible.
