Cowboy came to visit me today with his dog-dad, Brian. I was originally contacted by Kim Kroger from Poverty’s Pets with a request to feature him in my upcoming book. My first response was going to be to decline the request because Cowboy is not predominantly of one breed. Not that there’s anything wrong with that…. It’s just that it’s a dog breed book that gives info about specific breeds.
Then I saw a snapshot of this drop dead gorgeous face….

Seriously, how is a person supposed to say no to something as adorable as this? You had me at hello, Cowboy…. you had me at hello…

I realized at the end of the session that my Pocket Wizard got switched off and my key and fill lights were not firing the whole time! Uuugh! So there were a lot of deep shadows in the pictures and a lot of detail was lost during post-processing. I was pretty bummed because these shots could have been much better. Maybe Cowboy’s dad will be kind enough to bring him by one more time so we can get some better ones. Still, even a less than perfect photo of this guy will make you go aaaawwwwweeee….

So, here’s the story of Cowboy’s rescue as told by Kim, the rescue worker…
Cowboy is a Mutt! Cowboy is better than TV. Just watch his ears! They went sideways in the same direction for one week, then straight up for a day or two…wonder where they will end up! We see some Shepard in him and we hear some Hound! He has this crazy siren-howl that he has been working on since he was a tiny pup – it is adorable. Poverty’s Pets volunteer, Kate, found little Cowboy in an alley. He was hanging out with a street dog, Travis, whom we also rescued that day. Cowboy was just a tiny little guy and he came down with Parvovirus within days of being in our care. This brutal virus seem to get the best of little Cowboy. He took a turn for the worse on his 5th day of enduring the virus. When we took him into the vet’s office they advised us that the kindest thing we could do was end his suffering and put him down – he most likely would not come back from being so sick. We said goodbye to our little pup and told him how sorry we were that we did not find him sooner. We let them take him in the back. We were very sad. The vet called us back three hours later with some odd news…”We simply can’t put him down – he is just too darn cute!” So, they left him in the hospital over night. Well it was meant to be – when they came in the next morning – there was Cowboy feeling much better and ready to go home! Cowboy made a strong recovery, Rescue Mutts are tough! We sent in his picture and information to a local newspaper for our adoptable dog of the month. Cowboy didn’t make it past the sales rep! He immediately called and asked to come see Cowboy. Brian came to “see” Cowboy with a check in his hand and leash in his pocket… I guess you know your dog when you see it! They are the perfect match. Cowboy now lives with his sister Mutt, Riley, and his new big happy family.
Cowboy & Brian. What a cute pair!
